I discovered Hiromi in a roundabout way. While browsing the work of the excellent photographer Rinko Kaweuchi I noticed she had done the headshot of a woman with a great smile and a distinctive hairstyle. When I looked up her name I discovered one of the most exciting jazz pianists working today.
I’ve since become a big fan of hers and this unexpected reworking of Beethoven stands out to me as one of the best pieces of cross-genre musical adaptation I’ve heard in ages.
The word “ratchet”, sidechained kickdrums, casual misogyny/slut-shaming and shoutouts to Japanese fashion designer Kenzo – make no mistake, this mix is a hot mess showcasing practically everything that’s wrong with modern R’n’B and hip hop. All that’s missing is “no homo”.
It also sounds GREAT. Fresh, sexy, crisp production and a great variety of big name and some lesser known artists. This 60min+ mix by Southern Hospitality DJ Rob Pursey is my favorite guilty pleasure lately. Enjoy.

I’ve always loved Aaliyah, and 4 Page Letter is one of my favorite songs. Montreal based producer CFCF slows it down, adds big, fat pads and a Three Six Mafia-esque beat to take it in a completely new, yet familiar direction. I’ve been obsessed with this sound for a while now and CFCF really delivers with this track.
I enjoy music that I find challenging. Sue Tompkin’s singing is definitely something I didn’t really understand at first but I kept finding myself wanting to hear it again.
